Custom Decorated T-Shirts: Embroidery, Appliqué & Rhinestone Application

PRP builds t-shirts carrying decoration most cut-and-sew factories refuse — from 24-head volume embroidery to partner-applied rhinestone and hand-set beading. Starting at 50 pieces per style, per colour.

Why Brands Come to PRP for Decorated T-Shirts

The typical factory split looks like this: factories capable of heavy embellishment require 300+ pieces. Factories that accept 50-piece runs don’t own embroidery machines. PRP exists at the intersection — our 24-head embroidery line runs in-house, and the 50-piece minimum holds even on decorated styles.

T-shirts are the most requested base garment for decoration. The chest placement, sleeve band, and back panel are all standard embroidery zones. If your design carries a logo, text, or motif in any of those positions, this is what we produce every week.

For rhinestone, appliqué, and chenille work, we coordinate through our partner network in the Dongguan area. You deal with one factory, one quote, one production timeline — we handle the coordination.

Decoration Options for T-Shirts at PRP

Flat & 3D Puff Embroidery — In-house, 24 heads

Our in-house embroidery line runs 24 heads simultaneously, meaning 24 garments are embroidered in one pass. Flat satin-stitch embroidery reaches down to 5mm letter height. 3D puff embroidery (foam under the top stitching) needs a minimum 10mm letter height — below that the foam won’t read. Both work on cotton, cotton/poly blends, and standard jersey. They do not work on waterproof-coated shell fabric — the needle holes destroy the membrane. We flag this before sampling starts.

Sequin Embroidery — In-house

Our embroidery machines carry sequin attachment devices. Sequin embroidery is best for large motifs or panel coverage on woven or structured fabric where the weight of sequins won’t distort the base. Cotton jersey usually works; lightweight chiffon does not.

Hotfix Rhinestone — Partner facility

Rhinestone presses bond stones to fabric using heat. It tolerates a 40°C gentle cycle but starts shedding after roughly 20–30 washes. For garments that will be machine-washed frequently, hand-sewn stones (our partner workshop) hold longer but cost more. Our partner network handles this through our production coordination — one order, one timeline.

Appliqué & Chenille Patches — Partner facility

Chenille patches need a minimum letter height of 5cm (2 inches) — below that the looped pile structure turns into mush. They work well on heavy cotton jersey, fleece, and canvas; they pull and bubble on lightweight jersey under 120gsm. Sewn-on patches last the life of the garment; heat-pressed only starts lifting after 10–20 washes. We default to sewn construction unless the buyer specifically requests heat-press only.

When This Isn't the Right Factory for Your T-Shirt Order

If your t-shirt design is a standard screen print or DTG graphic, we are not the most efficient factory. Screen printing at volume is a commodity operation — dozens of factories in the Pearl River Delta run it faster and cheaper than we do. Our setup is optimised for embroidery and structural embellishment, not high-volume flat printing runs.

If you need 300+ pieces of a plain, undecorated tee, there are faster and cheaper options. Our 50-piece minimum exists to accommodate embellished styles. On a basics order with no decoration, you pay for a capability you are not using.

If your design calls for embroidery on waterproof or technical shell fabric — ski jackets, hard-shell outerwear, packable windbreakers — needle holes from the embroidery process destroy the waterproof membrane. We will tell you this before sampling starts, not after. The alternative in those cases is a woven patch sewn onto the outer fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order for a decorated t-shirt at PRP?

50 pieces per style, per colour. The same 50-piece minimum applies whether the order includes flat embroidery, 3D puff, or sequin embroidery. Three colourways of the same decorated style means a 150-piece total minimum.

Can embroidery be done on 100% cotton t-shirts?

Yes. Flat and 3D puff embroidery works well on cotton jersey with a cut-away or tear-away backing to stabilise the fabric under the needle. High-stretch fabrics need a cut-away backing or the design distorts. The only t-shirt fabric where embroidery fails is waterproof-coated shell fabric — needle holes destroy the coating.

How long does it take to produce a decorated t-shirt order?

Sampling takes 7–14 days. Bulk production runs 25–45 days from sample approval. A complex 3D puff design may need one or two sampling rounds to dial in the foam height, adding roughly a week before bulk starts.

What is the digitizing fee for embroidery?

USD 40–100 one-time per design. Simple text logos digitize at the lower end; detailed crests with many colours and mixed stitch types run toward the upper end. The fee is charged once — once digitized, the design is on file for all reorders.

How durable is rhinestone application through washing?

Hotfix rhinestone tolerates a 40°C gentle machine cycle but starts shedding after roughly 20–30 washes. Hand-sewn stone work from our partner workshop holds longer but costs more per piece. For garments washed frequently, embroidery or sewn chenille patches are a more durable long-term choice.

Can you combine multiple decoration techniques on a single t-shirt?

Yes. Common combinations include embroidery on the chest with chenille letters on the back, or a sequin-embroidered motif with rhinestone scatter. Adding a second technique typically adds a few days to the bulk lead time in the industry generally — PRP will confirm the specific timeline for your combination during sampling.

We send physical production samples of our embroidery, appliqué, rhinestone, and beading work — taken from actual production runs, not stock samples. Seeing the texture and build quality before you order removes the biggest uncertainty in working with a new factory. Shipping cost is covered by you.
