A streetwear label in Manchester signed off on a size M hoodie sample in March. The fit was exactly what they wanted — 320 GSM fleece, boxy through the body, sleeves that stopped at the wrist bone. They ordered 400 pieces across S through XXL and waited.
When the cartons landed, the M pieces matched the sample perfectly. The XXL did not. The body had grown four inches at the chest, but the sleeves had only grown half an inch, so the largest customers got a garment that fit across the shoulders and ended three inches short at the wrist. Nobody had done anything malicious. The factory had simply applied a generic grade because the brand never supplied a graded spec, and apparel size grading is the step where that omission becomes 80 unsellable hoodies.
Grading is the least glamorous part of product development and the one most likely to quietly ruin a production run. It is not design, it is not sewing, and it never appears in a lookbook. It is arithmetic applied to a pattern — and if the arithmetic is wrong, every size except the one you fitted comes back wrong.

What Apparel Size Grading Actually Is
Grading is the process of taking one approved pattern — the base size — and scaling it up and down to create the rest of the size run. It is not photographic enlargement. You cannot scale a size M pattern by 110% and get an L, because the human body does not grow proportionally. Between an M and an L, the chest might gain two inches while the neck gains a quarter inch. Each measurement point moves by its own amount.
Those amounts are called grade rules — at this point of measure, each size step changes by this much. A complete set across every point of measure is what turns one pattern into a size run. Written down in a table, it becomes a graded spec sheet: the document your factory needs and the one most first-time brands never send.
Who fills that gap matters. If you do not supply grade rules, the factory uses its own house grade — reasonable, but built for the styles that factory usually makes. Apply a house grade built for fitted womenswear to an oversized unisex hoodie and the result is technically graded and commercially wrong.
How Grade Rules Work in a Real Size Run
Choosing the Base Size
Everything starts with the base size, sometimes called the sample size. This is the size you actually fit on a body or a dress form, the one you iterate through the sampling process until it is right. Every other size is derived from it mathematically.
Pick the base size at the middle of your intended run, not at the edge. If you sell XS through XXL, fit a size M or L. Grading two steps in each direction from the center keeps cumulative error small. Fit an XS and grade five steps up to XXL and every rounding decision compounds in the same direction — which is exactly how a size run ends up with wearable small sizes and unwearable large ones. If sales history shows one size dominating, weight the choice toward it.
Grade Rules by Point of Measure
A point of measure is any specific place a garment gets measured: chest width, body length, sleeve length, shoulder width, neck width, armhole depth, hem opening, cuff width. A tee might have eight. A structured jacket might have twenty-five.
Each one needs its own rule. The common mistake is grading only the obvious three — chest, length, sleeve — and letting the factory infer the rest. Inference is where necks come out wrong. On a knit crew tee, neck width typically grows only an eighth to a quarter inch per size, and a proportional grade produces an XXL with a neckline wide enough to slip off the shoulder.
Write the rule for every point of measure your tech pack lists. If a point of measure does not change between sizes — some drawcord lengths and pocket sizes are deliberately constant — write that down explicitly as a zero grade. A blank cell reads as an oversight; a zero reads as a decision.
Typical Increments You Should Expect
Grade increments vary by category, market, and fit intent, but a few conventions are stable enough to use as a sanity check. In a standard adult size run, chest or bust commonly grades one to two inches per size step, body length half an inch to one inch, sleeve length a quarter to half an inch, shoulder width a quarter to half an inch, and neck width an eighth to a quarter inch.
Larger sizes often need a bigger step than smaller ones. Many brands grade one inch per step through the middle of the run and widen to one and a half or two inches above XL, because body measurements spread out at the upper end. A run that uses a single flat increment from XS to 3XL will fit correctly in the middle and poorly at both extremes.
None of these are laws — they are the range a factory expects to see. If your graded spec falls far outside them, that is worth a second look before cutting.
Why Knits and Wovens Don’t Share Grade Rules
Knit fabric stretches and recovers. Woven fabric mostly does not. That single difference changes the grading math.
A cotton jersey tee at 180 GSM has enough mechanical stretch to absorb a modest grading error — a half inch of missing chest width disappears into the fabric’s give, and the wearer never notices. The same half inch missing from a woven poplin shirt is a button that pulls. Woven styles need tighter grading and more generous ease built into the base pattern, because the fabric will not cover for you.
Stretch content complicates it further. A legging at 80/20 nylon-spandex is graded with negative ease, meaning the garment is smaller than the body it fits. Grade it with positive-ease rules and the largest sizes lose their compression — the XXL becomes a loose pant, which is a fit failure even though every measurement is technically larger than the size below it.
Where Grading Quietly Breaks
Four places account for most grading failures we see arrive as fit complaints.
The armhole is first. Armhole circumference and depth have to grade together, and the sleeve cap has to grade to match — when the body armhole grows and the cap does not, the sleeve either binds or puckers when set. This is the most common grading defect in outerwear. Neck openings are second, for the reason above: they grade far less than intuition suggests.
Placement of applied details is third. A chest print centered on a size M is not centered on a size XXL unless print placement is graded too — and the same holds for pocket, embroidery, and label position. Graded placement points belong in the tech pack alongside graded measurements.
Graphic scale is fourth, and it is a decision rather than a defect. Some brands scale the print with the garment, others hold it constant across all sizes, and both are defensible. What causes trouble is not deciding, because then the factory decides for you and the answer may change between runs.

How to Verify a Factory’s Grading Before Bulk
You do not have to take grading on faith, and you should not. Three checks catch nearly everything.
First, ask for the graded spec sheet back before bulk cutting — not your version, theirs. A factory that has genuinely graded your pattern can produce a table covering every point of measure across every size. If your own document comes back with no numbers added, the grading has not been done yet.
Second, order a size set — one physical garment in each extreme size plus the base, typically S, L, and XXL. Measuring three real garments catches errors a spreadsheet hides, because it shows what happens when a grade rule meets real fabric behavior and real sewing tolerance. This is the highest-value sample you can order and the one brands most often skip to save two weeks.
Third, confirm the measurement tolerance. Every factory works to a tolerance — commonly half an inch on chest width and a quarter inch on shorter points of measure for knits. Tolerance stacks with grading, so if your grade step is half an inch and your tolerance is half an inch, two adjacent sizes can legitimately overlap.
When your grade step is small, you need the tolerance tightened, and that has to be agreed in writing before production, not argued after. Our quality control process measures graded points of measure against the approved spec on a sampling basis through the run, not only at final inspection.
International standards exist for the underlying body data, and they are worth knowing about even though few small brands buy them outright. ISO 8559-1:2017 defines how body measurements should be taken and named, which is why factories in different countries can talk about “chest girth” and mean the same landmark. ASTM D5585-21 publishes body measurement tables for the adult female misses figure type, which is a common starting reference for brands building a size chart from scratch rather than copying one.

Worth noticing: length grades less than width almost everywhere. Brands new to grading assume the opposite, which is how oversized styles end up looking cropped at the top of the run.
